Tydewi Binderie is a small hand-bindery run by the Sisters of St. John the Beloved at the Monastery of Dewi Sant, located in the hills outside of Perth in Western Australia.
Dedicated to Pius XII p.p. Tydewi Binderie specializes in traditional handcrafted books and fine bindings whilst offering a book repair and restoration service to Holy Church and the local community.
Our mission is to perpetuate the written Word and place it in the hands of the faithful so that they can enter in more fully through their christian life lived through, with and in Jesus Christ, the Word of God, and by following the written word grow in understanding and participate more deeply in the Liturgy of the Sacred Mass – the Eucharistic Celebration of Life.
We do this by trying to use words correctly in our speech and writings to return them to their godly use and orientation to the divine; and by asking you - our friends, benefactors and those who support us – to look and see how words, that once referred to the Sacred, have fallen into common secular use and to consciously make the effort to use these words in their proper context and meaning.
We also ask of you to make donations of books to us – free of all charges, both very old and new, especially of Breviaries (ie. The Divine Office, 3 book set and Daily Prayer); Sunday and Weekday Missals, Bibles and Liturgical books of Blessings, Sacramentaries, Lectionaries; Code of Canon Law, etc. and also good spiritual and religious works.
We, then, repair the books and pass them on to Seminarians, Religious Sisters and Brothers, Clergy, Churches, and those faithful who have need.
WE ask YOU to support us and help us in this work of promoting God’s spoken and written Word in our world today.
You can help by sending us voluntary donations of liturgical books, even very old ones in poor condition because they can often be most useful, even if beyond repair, by supplying missing pages for other books.
OR by making a financial donation to enable the purchase of new Divine Office books and Bibles and Missals. In this case we ask you send us a bank cheque or money order made payable to:
The Community of the Beloved Disciple.
We will post you a letter of thanks and a receipt and let you know which books were purchased and to whom they were given.
All mail should be sent to: P.O. Box 1116, Kalamunda 6926, Western Australia.
Our Daily Work is often the repair of missals and many, many Divine Office books, also Lectionaries and old Bibles mostly circa 1850-1910. Some of these are very lovely with beautiful illustrated plates and brass decorative edges and clasps and much gold work on the covers. Some have been left out in the garden shed for years, others may have had the misfortune to be caught in a flood, all are inherited, passed on from one generation to the next.
But these wonderful aged books were made in the old traditional ways of bookbinders throughout the ages and can be repaired and restored to rise, transfigured to new life, for the enjoyment and spiritual edification of generations to come in the future. And that is a very wonderful thing.
Unlike modern-day books, made quickly on machines with poor quality paper and consigned to the trash bin within perhaps years, the books of the old traditional bookbinders last for hundreds of years.
So, we, too, endeavour to perpetuate the hand crafted book, sewn on cords, and covered in leather with gold finishing or blind tooling by repairing and restoring and also the making of new books.
New books can also be pocket note pads, journals, albums, account books, Registers, Parish Records, the binding of looseleaf pages of sermons, Sunday bulletins, family histories, an autobiography, or biography, minute books and notebooks, hard-cover exercise books etc. etc.
New Bibles purchased with cheap covers are sometimes brought to us and the book is transformed to a better glory in a new leather binding reflecting the personality of the owner.
One of the most pleasurable jobs that come our way sometimes is the binding or rebinding of sheet music. Perhaps, the Sonatas of Beethoven or the works of Schubert or Strauss. Or perhaps, the recasing of a set of paintings or drawings or the works of Thomas Hardy or Shakespeare.
We effect repairs to all kinds of books and favourite prayer books. From modern day books to the golden days of years past.
PLEASE NOTE: A deposit will be required to be paid before work begins on all restoration work.
BOOKS NEEDING REPAIR can be sent to us by mail, by courier or by delivering them to the monastery personally.
BOOKS CAN BE DROPPED OFF and picked up, during normal trading hours, from Tuesday 9am til Noon on Saturday at the following shops in Perth, Western Australia:
