 THE ROAD OF THE BLIND

I dreamed that I traveled a well worn road with a throng so merry and gay,
And I clamored like all the other folk for the pleasures along the way,
And we all marched on where the others had gone, not knowing that those ahead,
Had reached the end and were suddenly hurled to the rocks below and were dead.

For the road I traveled abruptly stopped at the edge of a vast abyss,
And each one moved with a careless step to a pit they could not miss,
And the ones before were marching o'er, yet were followed by those behind,
A constant stream of horrible death, for all on the road were blind!

And we did not know that far below lay a pit like the pit of Hell,
'Cause never a word escaped the lips of the victims as they fell,
And never did one return again to warn those rushing on,
So they lived and died in the human tide, and we hardly missed them gone.

I too would have ended with similar fate, but someone whispered to me
That the only reason I walked that road was because I could not see.
I shrugged Him off with a jeering laugh, "A crowd like this can't be wrong."
"The blind are leading the blind," He said, "And you're singing the Fool's old song."

His words kept haunting me constantly, and ruined my shallow peace,
For I suddenly knew that He was right, and I longed for sweet release.
The crowd cried, "Come, and enjoy the fun." and it seemed I had to go
Yet, His voice replied, when the din had died, "You'll die if you don't say No!"

So I finally dashed from the maddening crowd, and cried, "I want to see!"
No sooner had the words escaped my lips, than He opened my eyes for me.
And Oh! What a sight! As out of my night, I viewed the awful abyss,
I shrunk with horror from near the edge of the chasm narrowly missed.

But the crowd rushed on, right over the brink, and others followed their fate,
An endless stream of hopeless ones that discovered the brink too late...
I saw the man who had rescued me as He tried to stop one more,
But He talked in vain; with a look of disdain, the blind man only swore.

Not wanting to see him drop to his death, I quickly left that place,
Only to gasp with awe again at the scene before my face!
For flowers and trees and birds and bees, and the sun, and a sky of blue,
Were things I had never seen before! Their beauty I never knew.

And briefly the scene behind was lost, as I looked at where I was brought,
For a place of beauty like this, I confess, had not even entered my thought.
Children were playing with pure delight, and mothers were sipping tea,
Some men were resting, others worked, but I noticed that all could see!

Some swam in a stream, some lay in the sun. One man read from a book.
And all seemed quite contented to me as I noticed in that brief look.
I was tempted to join them, but then my eye caught sight of only a few
Who were out by the road where the blind walked by, trying to save them, I knew.

And then in a flash it occurred to me, that all of them once were blind,
And had traveled the road that I just left, but were rescued just in time.
And now they lived in a marvelous place with never a worry or fear,
Not even for those on "Deception Road" who were dying so very near.

I stood astounded and troubled within, at those who now could see,
That living so close to that awful place, they smiled indifferently.
For most (except for the very few), spent hardly a fleeting breath
In trying to stop the blinded ones from rushing on to their death.

But then my shock was much increased as I talked to one of "the few"
And found that most of the blinded ones, those that could now see, knew!
Oh! Horror of horrors! How could it be... that they lived so near to that hell,
Yet did not plead for the blind to stop, nor wept for them when they fell.

And I suddenly knew what I must do, so I rushed to that human stream,
But ere I could cry to one passing by, I awoke with a start from my dream.
At first a measure of sweet relief swept over my troubled soul.
A moment's rest, then thoughts returned that made my blood run cold!

For as I pondered my vivid dream a truth came home to me,
That I indeed lived by the road of the people that cannot see.
The ones I loved were on that road, and the friends that I had met,
And all were rushing madly on to the place of eternal death.

And hell and destruction were just ahead; I saw that they did not know
The weeping and wailing that fill that place where the blind are sure to go.
And I cried, Oh God, please use me now, to rescue souls from Hell,
Make me one of the very few that will do my duty well."

There are lots who see, but are not concerned, they are living in 'just' pursuit
Of the things of time and sense, and so to the blind they are deaf and mute.
They are saved, oh yes, or so they say, but it bothers me that they enjoy,
To live in the sunshine by that road, where the blind pass on and die...

And the fate of the lost has seldom crossed their minds as they live at ease,
And they spend their time in peace sublime with the birds and flowers and trees.
The road of sin that ends in despair is crowded with those they know...
"Oh God, awaken us all," I cried, "To call to the blind as they go."

The road is broad and the crowd is large, but if each stopped one or two,
What joy would be ours when they turned aside to find they were ones we knew.
A brother or sister, a Mom or Dad, or even a friend you know,
To rescue one is a work well done, and the Savior will tell you so.

The road of the blind and the blind on the road are always so very near,
Shall we trifle with things that will fade away, while they rush madly on to despair?
Why not spend our time by the road of the blind, bringing many from out of their night,
To shine as the stars in the glory above, in the realm of Eternal Light.

Thanks so much Barbara for this soul searching story....or is it a story?

What if we could each save just one soul for our Savior....

If at first you don't succeed, throw away the pain, but keep the lesson..........
