Come Follow Jesus
John 1:40-51
Key Scripture 41-42
Do you remember when you first heard about and understood who Jesus was and what he had done for you. Did it excite you. Were you told by someone who was enthusiastic.
Do you remember how you felt when you understood?
Think about how these two men felt when John told them that he was that very one that John had been preaching about all this time.
These men, all this time had been walking with John, as his disciples. When they heard that this was Jesus they left John, and followed Jesus.
When you heard the good news about the son of the living GOD, what did you do.
Andrew goes and tells Simon Peter. Sharing with someone else what he knows. Who are you sharing God with?
The bible say's the first thing he did was find his brother Simon and tell him.
Are you telling anyone about Jesus. Have you stopped following after what is not of God. Here we are, Jesus has come as the light of the world, and some of us don't want to be like these two disciples. We would rather follow man, than to turn and follow Jesus. We come up with the excuse I am not ready to change yet. Well, let me tell you, if you don't change you will be lost. These men, they did not hesitate, they followed Jesus. He didn't even have to ask them. After all they had heard. They wanted to know for themselves. What better way to find out if Jesus is who they say he is. Ask him yourself. When is the last time, you truly wanted to know something from the Lord. Are you asking. That is to say, are you praying. We can't go to Jesus physically like Simon and Andrew did, but we can go to him in Prayer. We know that he came to his own and his own received him not. We know that they didn't recognize the son of the living God. That is to say the world. But for those of us who have been listening. We can no longer say that we didn't know that was Jesus. We can not keep giving man the glory for what God has done for us. In the name of Jesus. Here we are asking for God to do something in the name of Jesus, but we don't want to follow Jesus, unless it is convenient for us. Well, let me tell you, death was not convenient for Jesus. So why should your following be convenient? Come follow me. Jesus knew these men right away. Let me ask another question, who are you bringing to Christ? When you tell someone about Jesus, are you enthusiastic or are you somber and lowly? For those who are somber and lowly, how do you expect to when a soul for the lord.
When Simon came to Jesus, his name was changed. Changing his name meant that he would no longer be the same. He would no longer act the same, not like he was acting all that bad, after all he was a disciple of John, so we know that he knew the way. But who better to show you then Jesus Christ himself.
You see, there is no way for any of us to remain the same when we follow after Christ. Your name changes, the way you act changes, the things you use to do, you don't do them any more. The places you use to do, you don't go anymore. Not if you are truly following Christ.
Changing his name, changing your name. You will not just be Bro. Mike anymore, you might be Pastor Mike, Not Just sister Sunday anymore, but Evangelist Sunday Morning. Not just Mr. Jimmy, But Apostle Jimmy.
Not just another one apart of the world, but separated for Christ. You can not continue to hang with the old crowd, they won't recognize you after you have began to walk with Jesus.
43: Jesus finding Philip told him, " Follow Me. What did Philip do. The same thing Andrew did, he found someone and told him the good news about Jesus Christ.
46. Andrew of course asked the all time question. Can any good thing come out of Nazareth? Philip didn't even bother to answer that question. He just told him to come see.
Just as the woman at the well tell the people. Come see a man, who told me all things about my life.
Come follow me.
Do you go every where by yourself? Never wanting to share the good things in your life with your friends and family? Are you the type of person that goes to programs, shows, concerts, goes to hear speakers and never tells anyone where your going, until you come back. Always wanting to keep all the good news to yourself.
Jesus is not to be bottled up. What he has given to us, he gives freely. For just one soul saved. The angels in heaven rejoice. But you, you don't want to witness, because you might get fired from your job. You don't want to go, because someone might talk about you. So... WHAT.
Come follow me.
How good it feels to tell someone about the love of God, how he sent his son Jesus to die for you and me. Rose him up again and brought him back to heaven to sit on his right side. How wonderful it feels to tell others how much Jesus loves them, what he gave for them. Sure it was painful, it was hard, he paid the price for us all. But if he hadn't, we would all be lost. You should be out there telling everyone and anyone about Jesus. What he has done for you and what he can do for them. How he changed you. How following him, didn't weaken you, but make you stronger. How his very presence in your life, increases your faith about God, about Jesus.
How listening to his teachings, and reading God's word has changed your lifestyle. Changed how you do things, and how you see others.
Don't you know that Jesus can see you, are you not aware that Jesus knew you before you were born. He was with his father in the beginning, nothing that was made, was made without him. You can't hide from Jesus. No matter who you are.
in verse 51 Jesus tells Nathaneal, that he will see heaven open, and the angels of God ascending and descending on the son of Man. How powerful is that. To be able to see in the spirit.
How power is it when Jesus speaks to your spirit and tells you what to do. How to do something. Don't you know that God prepared his son, with all things and all people. There is nothing that you can go through that Jesus can't bring you through. Where he won't be there with you. Come Follow me.
Follow Jesus. Follow after his goodness. Follow after his teachings.
Stop what your doing in the world that is not of God, and follow Jesus. When you hear something good about what God has done, go tell someone. share the love of Jesus with someone. Don't stop witnessing to others. The word tells us that we are our brother's keepers. Well, let us begin keeping our brother. Let us go back to the first time we believed in Jesus. The first time we heard about Jesus. Remember the Joy and relief that you felt, share that with someone else. The way he changed your life. You should want to see him do that for someone else. He is so wonderful, why keep him to yourself. Share what he can do for other's. Be that witness as Philip and Andrew were to Simon Peter and Nathaneal. Don't just let it stop at the church on Sundays. Take the truth with you outside of the church, move outside of your comfort zone. Move into new areas, and tell others but Jesus. Bring someone with you to church. Can't you just imagine how excited these men were when they heard it was Jesus. Are you this enthusiastic when you find a good bargain. Do you get excited when you hear good news. Well, remember how you feel at these times, and take that same enthusiasm, use it to draw others to Christ. Stop being so presuming and assuming and open your mouth. Be what God has called you to be. Go... tell it on the Mountain. Tell as many as you can, buy stickers for your car, give a bible to someone who doesn't have one, walk the Christian life, live the Christian life. Be that example of a Christian that you would have liked to see when you were lead to Christ. Share your Sunday lesson with someone at work. Share it with a child, an elderly friend even family members. Show that same enthusiasm to your children while they are still young. That way, when they are out of the home, they will take your enthusiasm for the word of God to their friends and lead them to Christ. Come Follow Jesus.
Take someone to a Christian Concert with you next time. Invite them to church next Sunday. Invite them over to a Bible study at your home. Go visit the Elderly, especially in the Convalescent Hospitals and those from your church family.
The good news didn't stop just because Jesus left this world, They good news got better when he left this world and returned to his father. Come follow Jesus.
Except when he changes your name, except that he will also change your lifestyle. He may changes your location of residence and change your friends. In the end, you are a winner not a loser. The head not the tail. The top, not the bottom. But first in order for us to succeed in this life, we must first stop what we are doing, and Come Follow Jesus. Then, go tell a friend and lead them to Christ just as you were lead.
