Observations that were considered contrary to the doctrine extolled in a specific church, by the author. In a general sense also, they provide an accurate foundation which can be used as a test for heresy, being in accord with Divine Revelation through Scripture. The Message of Jonah and Salvation through the shed blood of Jesus, is true and provides a good test for comparing doctrines.

The message of Jonah

The message of Jonah is that we need to repent of sin or be destroyed. It is an integral part of the gospel message.

"In our day if we repent of our sins and confess with our mouth that Jesus is Lord and that God raised Him from the dead (Rom. 10:9a), God is faithful and just to forgive us our sins (1 John 1:9) and by His grace He covers our sins by the blood of Jesus (Eph 1:7) and saves us (Rom 10:9b), at which time the Holy Spirit takes up residence in our lives, without the aid of human hands (1 John 5:7-12, Rom. 8:9-11, Acts 2:38, Eph. 1:13, 1 Cor. 6:19-20). Man has a God-created void that can only be filled by being born again and by an ongoing personal relationship with God the Father through Jesus Christ."

A sober warning against becoming involved in a "Miracle Working Church" that does not glorify Our Lord first and foremost.

 Jesus said in Matthew 7:22-24 

"Many will say to me on that day, `Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and in your name drive out demons and perform many miracles?' Then I will tell them plainly, `I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!' 

"Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock."

"Be ever vigilant" 

On the "Chat" website we discussed the "All Embracing Liberal Christianity," adopted by many churches these days. This "any thing goes doctrine,'' has also succeeded in opening the gates to an even worse heresy than that of one of it's under lying causes, liberal Christian theology. With the undermining of truths spoken of in the Bible's foundational passages written in the book of Genesis, the spirit of un accountability has made light of certain other parts of God's word in addition. (For an excellent apologetic on the scientific truth of Genesis incidentally, I would recommend the Answers in Genesis Website). ... In the book of Titus 1 : 9 We read: 

"He must hold fast to the sure and trustworthy Word of God as he was taught it, so that he may be able both to give stimulating instruction and encouragement in sound (wholesome) doctrine, and to refute and convict those who contradict and oppose it --- showing the wayward their error." Titus 1 : 9 (Amplified Bible)

I feel I should draw attention to a manifestation based movement within some churches, that is sweeping the world. Whilst I cannot emphasize strongly enough, "Not All," there are widely publicised "Revivals" within some churches wherein scant regard is paid to our Saviour's sacrifice on our behalf, if at all. The gifts of the Spirit, not the Giver take priority. I think part of St. Paul's letter to the Galatians, should act as a warning here to. 

Gal 1 : 6) I am surprised and astonished that you are so quickly turning renegade and deserting Him Who invited and called you by the grace (unmerited favour) of Christ, the Messiah, [and that you are transferring your allegiance] to a different, even an opposition gospel.

7) Not that there is [or could be] any other [genuine Gospel], but there are [obviously] some who are troubling and disturbing and bewildering you (with a different kind of teaching which they offer as a gospel) and want to pervert and distort the Gospel of Christ, the Messiah [into something which it absolutely is not].

8) But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach to you a gospel contrary to and different from that which we preached to you, let him be accursed --- anathema, devoted to destruction, doomed to eternal punishment! Galatians 1 : v 6 - 8 Amplified Bible

Test the spirits

In some Churches, more emphasis is placed on the so called miracles the church and it's members have experienced, than on the Saviour Jesus Christ. The Bible constantly warns us to "test the spirits" to see they are of God. Especially in the "latter days when many false prophets will arise and deceive many, even the very elect." For the truly "Born Again" Christian that has the genuine "Holy Spirit of God" living in them from the time they were saved, this would be very difficult, but is still possible. Especially for a new Christian who may have already experienced supernatural, God given blessings.

Doctrine 

The first thing anyone should do when joining a church, is to thoroughly check it's doctrine, what they actually believe. Whilst there are significant differences in doctrine even between the main line churches, i.e. Baptists & others, Baptism by full immersion, Church of England, Baptism (Christening) at a font, or other water containing receptacle, these differences take second place, (or should do) to acknowledging Jesus Christ as Saviour and Lord above all else.

True or False? 

As a basic guideline to determine the truth of a church, ask yourself: Is our Lord & Saviour Jesus Christ, Glorified? Are, (if any) spiritual manifestations always secondary to this? Is emphasis always placed on Jesus Christ as Saviour & Lord and encouragement made to ask Him in to your own life?  Do they believe in the Holy Trinity, God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit? The answer to diversity in unity. 

Finances 

Is undo emphasis placed on a churches financial requirements, or do they trust God to provide? Whilst acknowledging a church obviously needs money, are "carrot on a stick" tactics used to relieve one of cash? i.e. "Tithing to God 10% of your earnings (Old Testament Law) is just giving back God His due, but that "Love Gift" you provide over the top of this, (to their church presumably) the Lord will really bless you for???" Be very cautious of Churches that advocate the so called "Prosperity Gospel." What profiteth a man if he gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?"

Giving

It is a good thing to give in order to further the Gospel and/or help people in genuine need. No argument there at all. But sadly in this day and age, it is also necessary, advisable and common sense, to thoroughly check out what your money will be used for. If it is for church expenditure and upkeep, then yearly accounts should be available to church members as with the C of E. If a church is promoting a suspect, but profitable doctrine, why are they doing it? 

Do not allow yourself to be fobbed off by peer pressure, i.e. not the thing to do. If a church has nothing to hide, it will not have any objection to your being aware of it's financial position. If it is a genuine and needy church, you may even be in a position to help. "The Lord loves a cheerful giver," but there is a great difference between being a cheerful giver, and a foolish one. 

On a more humorous note: Whilst of course anyone is welcome to Rahab's Church, it is primarily designed for Sex Workers. Experience has shown that such ladies have a mind like a cash register, anyway!!!! No disrespect intended.)  

The Holy Spirit 

Genuine revivals can take place in churches un deniably, and the "Born Again" believer can experience a genuine boost, a further infilling of the Holy Spirit, and that is Scriptural. Any church that claims it has a new revelation from God, that is not in accord with God's communication to man, the Bible, is in error and as such any supernatural revelations it claims to have received, should be treated with great caution and discernment. The deceiver, Satan is always at work, "seeking whom he may devour." The Bible says, "Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today and forever." Please always bare this in mind, especially when a "new enlightenment" is advocated. They happen, but if of God, the Holy Spirit NEVER leads contrary to Scripture and always glorifies Christ.

On Guard

You are not going to be condemned to hell for being sceptical, it is Scriptural to "Test the Spirits." Many cults find fertile pastures in new Christians. Be ever wary of anyone that adds additional demands to the Newly Born Again Christian Saved by Grace. Especially where confusion is caused. I am not referring here to advice that helps one grow in grace, but advice that by it's very nature would imply, Christ's sacrifice was not enough to cover all our sins, you need to add something more. Be aware there are those that would seek to pervert, add to, or put a stumbling block in the way of the Sinner Saved by Grace. 

False Doctrine 

Fortunately, there is much evidence to be found, that refutes cults, schism's and sects. But despite this, thousands of people have been deceived. So strongly do I feel the need to warn of there dangers, that I have included as a very general guide, evidence against "heresy" which is considered to be true and accurate. Not just the "nit picking" that can happen even with genuine revivals.

"Empty your mind" 

This is a favourite mantra of many false religions and cult groups. The Holy Spirit is the only one who can abide in us and work through us with our minds and willpower totally intact. It takes an act of the will to let the barriers down in our minds and spirit, and this often gives the enemy an opening, through sin in our lives, to come in and do his work either through oppression or outright possession. We must never empty our minds as Christians, for it is with our minds that we can test the spirits.
