CURRICULUM

East St. Paul Lutheran School (ESPL) offers those subjects commonly taught at the kindergarten, elementary and junior high levels. In keeping with the purposes of ESPL the curriculum is based Girl Reading upon the Word of God. The Christian religion forms the center upon which we base all instruction and learning. The curriculum and course of study are in compliance with the standards of the State of Minnesota. The areas of learning are as follows: Religion and memory work, social studies (geography/history), language arts (reading, literature, writing, English, and spelling), science, mathematics, Spanish (grades 5-8), art, music, Minnesota History, physical education and health education. Spanish is mandatory for the 5th through 8th grade.

The specific areas of the curriculum for each grade level are explained in the classroom syllabus. The classroom syllabus is given to parents when teachers make their home visits in August prior to the school year.

Music Classes
Class Singing All students in all grades participate in classroom music. In addition, Band is offered to students in grades 4-8, and our performing choir is open to 5th through 8th graders. Rehearsals are conducted during school hours. Band and Choir students are involved in a number of performances during the school year and are required to participate as part of their grading. The Choir may go on a spring tour. This tour if offered, is optional.

Sex Education
The teaching of human sexuality is the primary responsibility of the parents. To assist parents with this responsibility, ESPL provides , as part of the registration fee, sex education books published by Concordia Publishing House:

Second and Third Grade
Where do Babies Come From
Fourth and Fifth Grade
How You Are Changing
Sixth and Seventh Grade
Sex and the New You
Eighth Grade
Love, Sex and God

The information contained in these books may be covered by your child's teacher as part of, or in conjunction with, religion classes, science, or health education. Notification will be provided to parents prior to when sex education lessons are presented. Parents may direct that their children be kept out of these class sessions by notifying the child(ren)'s teacher.
