For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God.
~ I Corinthians 1:18 ~

This devotional touches my heart more deeply than any other
devotional I have ever posted. Hallelujah for the cross...the
cross of my Saviour....
The cross is not a popular topic, though it is a popular
religious icon. I do not worship the cross. I worship the Son
of God, Whose death on Calvary's cross takes away my sin!
Hallelujah! but folks don't want to talk about sin, at least,
not their own *_*
God's Word tells us that 'all have sinned and come short of the
glory of God.' There is none that is righteous, no, not one.
So that makes me, you, and every man, woman, and child a sinner
by nature. Some are "good" sinners. Some are "bad" sinners. But
all have sinned.
The cross is a measure of God's love. 'For God so loved the
world that He gave His only begotten Son....' But the cross is a
measure of God's hatred...of sin. The sinless blood of the Lamb of
God is what takes away the sin of the world...nothing else. Not
our own blood...our own sacrifice or physical death. Only in
Jesus' blood can our sins be cleansed. But that is not a
popular subject, even among suppposed religious sects today. We
want to earn our salvation, either through doing good deeds or
through religious acts (baptism, joining a church). But if
there was any other way to be saved, why did God the Father
give His Son? Why did God the Son give His life? There is no
other way but 'the way, the truth, and the life', JESUS!
For this devotional, I am sharing a hymn, then a sermon that I include in one of my
books (Our Refuge). This is
why I love the cross...I love the Lamb for sinners slain!
Again...
For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish
foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God.
~ I Corinthians 1:18 ~

Words: Elisha A. Hoffman ~*~ Music: John H. Stockton
Down at the cross where my Savior died,
Down where for cleansing from sin I cried,
There to my heart was the blood applied;
Glory to His Name!

I am so wondrously saved from sin,
Jesus so sweetly abides within;
There at the cross where He took me in;
Glory to His Name!

Oh, precious fountain that saves from sin,
I am so glad I have entered in;
There Jesus saves me and keeps me clean;
Glory to His Name!

Come to this fountain so rich and sweet,
Cast thy poor soul at the Savior's feet;
Plunge in today, and be made complete;
Glory to His Name!

Refrain:
Glory to His Name, glory to His Name:
There to my heart was the blood applied;
Glory to His Name!

The Repentant Malefactor
Sermon preached by Pastor Samuel Crosby,
Coastal Baptist Church, Saint Mary's, GA,
Sunday, May 2nd, 2004
"Tonight, I want to share with you from Scripture
a portion of the greatest true love story ever recorded in
history. Turn with me in your Bibles to the Gospel of Luke,
chapter twenty-three.
  "Let's begin in verse thirty-two."
32 And there were also two other, malefactors, led with him to be put to death.
33 And when they were come to the place, which is called Calvary, there they crucified him, and the malefactors, one on the right hand, and the other on the left.
34 Then said Jesus, Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do. And they parted his raiment, and cast lots.
35 And the people stood beholding. And the rulers also with them derided him, saying, He saved others; let him save himself, if he be Christ, the chosen of God.
36 And the soldiers also mocked him, coming to him, and offering him vinegar,
37 And saying, If thou be the king of the Jews, save thyself.
38 And a superscription also was written over him in letters of Greek, and Latin, and Hebrew, THIS IS THE KING OF THE JEWS.
39 And one of the malefactors which were hanged railed on him, saying, If thou be Christ, save thyself and us.
40 But the other answering rebuked him, saying, Dost not thou fear God, seeing thou art in the same condemnation?
41 And we indeed justly; for we receive the due reward of our deeds: but this man hath done nothing amiss.
42 And he said unto Jesus, Lord, remember me when thou comest into thy kingdom.
43 And Jesus said unto him, Verily I say unto thee, Today shalt thou be with me in paradise.
  "Now let's pray
together. Our Father, this
evening we thank You for Jesus Christ. We thank You for His
precious blood that was shed for our sins. And I pray, Holy
Ghost, this evening that You'll do a work here. Help us, LORD.
Thou knowest the needs of Thy preacher and Thy people.
"I pray, LORD, today that You?ll overshadow me.
May Christ be seen. I pray, Holy Ghost, You'll take the Word of
God home to hearts today, that It might prick the hearts of
those who need to hear. And, LORD, may they respond as You deem
fit. And, God, we'll praise You and thank You in Jesus' name,
amen.
  "In this passage of
Scripture, we see several
things. We see the two sinners being crucified with Christ. But
the main thing I see here is a request for salvation. This thief
over in the book of Luke asked the Lord something. In verse
thirty-two he asks, "Lord, remember me when thou comest into
thy kingdom."
  "Now you've got to
get the picture. The Lord Jesus
is hanging on the cross with a criminal on a cross on either
side of Him. There's one on one side and one on the other. They
were both malefactors--they were wicked sinners. And as they hung
on crosses at Calvary, the Lord Jesus being in the center, both
of these sinners railed on Jesus Christ. They cast accusations
in His teeth. They mocked Him. They made fun of Him.
  "But after a while,
one of these thieves saw
something that the other thief did not see. One of the thieves
saw that this man was indeed unjustly judged--that He was not on
the cross because of His own guilt. He recognized Jesus Christ
for Who He was: the Lord of Heaven. And he cried out to Him and
said, "Lord, remember me when thou comest into thy kingdom."
  "I want to look at
this request a little bit this
evening, and I want to look at the Lord's reply to this. In
death, Jesus was not alone. There was a sinner, a transgressor
on either side of Him. It was prophesied in Isaiah fifty-three,
verse twelve. It says there, 'He hath poured out his soul
unto death: and he was numbered with the transgressors; and he
bare the sin of many, and made intercession for the
transgressors.'
  "He made
intercession for both of these men. The
one spurned the goodness of God, turned Heaven down, and died
and went to Hell. Now you've got to remember that the Bible
says, 'He bare the sin of many, and made intercession for
the transgressors.' Plural. Jesus Christ made intercession
for both of these men. But one of them would not have anything
to do with God, would not have anything to do with Christ, and
turned down the offer of Heaven! He died in his sins and went
to Hell. That was his choice.
"The Bible says that Jesus came into the world to
save sinners--Matthew one and verse twenty-one. The angel of the
LORD is talking to Joseph about Mary. 'And she shall bring
forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall
save his people from their sins.'
  "Luke chapter
nineteen and verse ten, Jesus
Himself said, 'For the Son of man is come to seek and to
save that which was lost.'
  "First Timothy
one-fifteen, 'This is a faithful
saying, and worthy of all acceptation, that Christ Jesus came
into the world to save sinners.' Could there be anything
plainer than that, beloved?
  "The Holy Ghost
testified in the Gospel according
to Matthew. The Holy Ghost did not leave it up to Mary and
Joseph to name this new Son. He said, 'I'm going to give you a
name for Him. You're going to call Him JESUS, for He shall save
His people from their sins.'
  "Jesus again
testified of His own self in Luke
chapter nineteen and verse ten. He said, 'I have come to seek
and to save that which was lost.'
  "And again, Paul
said, 'Christ Jesus came into
the world to save sinners.' Let there be no mistake. Jesus
Christ came to save sinners! He did not come just because He
wanted a break from Heaven for a while. He came to save sinners!
Did He heal the sick? Did He raise the dead? Did He cure the
blind? the lame? He did all these wonderful things. That is
true. But that is not why He came! He came to save sinners!
"Christ lived a sinless life for one reason, so
that He could save sinners! He went to Calvary and died for one
purpose and one purpose alone. I know He died to glorify His
Father, but He died so that He could save sinners. That's why
He came. That's why He lived. That's why He died--to save sinners.
  "Now get that in
your head this evening. Christ
came to save sinners. We find Him dying on Calvary here in this
account. We see our Lord doing His gracious work of saving an
individual sinner, even while He is in the very act of dying
for the sins of the whole world.
  "In this account
there are several things that
draw my attention and may draw yours. First of all, it tells of
the salvation of a bad man...a man like you and me. That always
draws my attention: that He would save a bad man.
  "The Bible says in
Romans chapter three and verse
twenty-three, 'For all have sinned....' You see, you and
I are in that category. Christ came to save a bad man. The
Bible says in Isaiah fifty-three, verse six, 'All we like
sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way;
and the LORD hath laid on him the iniquity of us all.'
  "Isaiah 64:6,
Sister Lori's favorite verse,
'But we are all as an unclean thing, and all our
righteousnesses are as filthy rags....'
  "So this account
tells about God saving a bad
sinner like you and me. This man had broken the law. He was
condemned. He was dying in punishment for that sin, but God had
mercy. Therefore, there is hope for the worst among us.
  "Aren't you glad
that God can and will save the
worst? There's hope! No matter what people have done, no matter
how low down in sin they've sunk, yet there's hope for the worst.
  "This man was
condemned! He was judged and
condemned and dying, and yet the Lord Jesus saved him. That
fact always gives me hope for all sinners.
  "I was talking the
other day to one of our
church members. He said he thought his father's conscience was
seared, because this father wouldn't spend any time in this
Christian man's home. This unsaved father will spend multiplied
amounts of time with unsaved family members, however. I told
our brother that I didn't believe his father's conscience was
seared. If his conscience was seared, he could stay around
godly folk and it wouldn't bother him. As long as it bothers
him, that's good news! As long as you've got breath and God
hasn't turned you over to a reprobate mind, there is hope for
you that you can be saved!
  "So this passage of
Scripture tells me about a
bad man being saved. Then it tells me about a man being saved
at the last moment. As long as there's life, there's hope; but
don't presume on the Lord! Remember, the other thief died in
his sin. Don't presume.
  "You've heard of
deathbed professions, people
dying slowly and turning to God in that crucial crisis moment?
Well some of those are real! I'm sure not all of them are, but
some of them are. Some call on God in a moment of crisis,
'matter of fact, I think most decisions for God come when we
come to an end of ourselves. We have to see that need before
we'll call for help, amen? Thank God for the hard times, because
those hard times are God's way of trying to get your attention,
that you might turn to Him.
  "So there's a bad
man saved at the last moment.
And then the third thing here that draws my attention is that
salvation came so quickly, so simply, and so definitely. This
man first reviled the Lord Jesus Christ; but then he repented
and asked for mercy, and God saved him! Quickly, simply.
  "Somebody said,
'Brother, is it hard to be
saved?? Well, no. I don't think it is. I think it's easy if
you'll just come. The hard part is getting people to come to
Christ. If you'll come believing, I guarantee you, He'll save
you! Amen!
  "Well, let's break
this down. I've just got two
points here, so you know when I get to the second one I'm at
least about halfway done.
  "First of all, let's
look again at the man's
prayer. Look over at verse forty-two. 'And he said unto
Jesus, Lord, remember me when thou comest into thy kingdom.'
  "I'd like to
dissect that prayer and say a couple
of things about it. Number one, I believe this man's prayer
showed that he believed in life after death. It doesn't speak of
'annihilation' here. That leaves some false religions out. He
knew and he believed in life after death.
  "You may say,
'Brother Crosby, I don't believe in
life after death.' Well, you're going to really be surprised one
day. I mean you're going to get a really shocking surprise,
because there is conscious life after this life. Oh, that's one
of the most glorious things about Christianity to me; it's that,
thank God, this is not all there is!
  "You know,
you look around sometimes at the rich
and famous. You see them living in their big homes and enjoying
their big yachts and fancy parties. Well, folks, listen: the
things they value most down here--gold, so pure it's clear--that's
what they use for pavement in Heaven!
"There is life after death. This man believed that
there was. Not only that, but this prayer shows that he
recognized Jesus as Lord. This can only come by spiritual
revelation. Evidently, he saw the glory of God in the face of
the crucified Christ.
"The Bible says in II Corinthians 4:6, 'For
God, who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, hath
shined in our hearts, to give the light of the knowledge of the
glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.'
"That's a lot of fancy terminology there that may
confuse rather than clarify. Let me make it really simple for
all of us. This man was on the cross and was dying. I don't
know if he was on the right hand or on the left hand, but the
crosses were so situated that he could look over and see Christ.
Somehow during that time of reviling him, the Spirit of God
came and spoke to his heart, showing him that Jesus Christ is
Lord. He cried out and said, 'Lord, remember me when thou comest
into thy kingdom.' God revealed that to him!
"May I say this, I believe anybody and everybody
could come and be saved if they'd turn from their sin and
believe in Jesus Christ. But I also know that the Holy Spirit
of God has to reveal Himself to us.
"Remember what Peter said in Matthew chapter
sixteen? Peter said, 'Thou art the Christ, the Son of the
living God.' and Jesus said, 'Flesh and blood hath not
revealed this unto thee, but my Father has revealed it unto you.'
"So you see, somehow God the Holy Ghost came. Can
you imagine hearing the words of the Lord Jesus Christ as He
hung on Calvary? He said, 'Father, forgive them....' Can
you imagine hearing Him say that next to you? Those words must
have sunk down in that thief's heart, and he must have thought,
'What kind of man is this, that can pray, "Father,
forgive them" when they're crucifying Him?' And God the
Holy Ghost started working on that boy's heart.
"Finally, he turned to that other thief and said,
'Listen, we don't need to revile this man again! You and I
deserve what we're getting, but this man's done nothing amiss.
And he turned to Jesus and said, 'Lord, remember me when
thou comest into thy kingdom.'
"Thank God, he saw the Lord! He opened his heart
to Him. And then thirdly his prayer showed that he believed
Christ had the power to save, and he asked Him to do it.
"Now look here. I've heard folks say, 'Brother
Crosby, I don't know how to pray.' Look at the prayer of this
thief. 'Lord, remember me when thou comest into thy kingdom.'
Now it wasn't a real hard prayer, was it? 'Lord, remember
me....' Couldn't you pray that? Couldn't you pray, 'Lord,
remember me? Lord, I'm a sinner. Lord, I'm dying in my sin!
Lord...remember me. Lord, forgive me. Have mercy, Lord.'
How hard is that?
"Romans 10:13 says, 'For whosoever shall call
upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.' I've heard people
say, 'Well, Preacher, I'm afraid if I call He wouldn't save me.'
Would you dare to call God a liar? Did God not say if you call,
He'd save you? Surely He'll do what He said! He said, 'Call on
Me.'
"The old songwriter wrote these words, 'The dying
thief rejoiced to see that fountain in his day; and there may I,
though vile as he, wash all my sins away!' 'There is a fountain
filled with blood drawn from Immanuel's veins, and sinners
plunged beneath that flood lose all their guilty stains!'
"Thank God, he was hanging on a cross, he'd been
judged, he was condemned, he was dying! Yet he cried out,
'Lord, remember me,' and showed that he had faith to
believe that Jesus Christ would save him when he called to Him.
"Oh, my friend.... Someone said, 'How much faith
does it take to be saved?' It takes enough to call. It takes
enough to call on Him. Will you call? Will you ask Jesus to
remember you?
"The dying thief's prayer revealed that he didn't
believe that this life was all there was to it. He believed in
life after death. He believed that Jesus Christ was Lord, and
he called on Him. That's what it takes to be saved. Are you
listening to me? To believe that Christ is Lord and to call on
Him.
"You may say, 'Well, I believe,' but you won't
call. That won't get you to Heaven. You've got to call. You
must call out to Him.
"And then let's look at the second part. We've
looked at the thief's prayer. Now let's look at the Lord's
answer. There are three things here.
"First of all, Jesus said, 'Thou shalt be...in
paradise.' Why do I say it like that, emphasizing those
first three words? There's no room for doubt here.
"Friend, when you leave this world, you lift up
your eyes in one of two places. You're either in Heaven or Hell.
There is no in between, where we can be 'purged' of our sins
after death through our own punishment or through someone else
praying or sacrificing or buying our way out. That isn't taught
in the Bible. The only place the word 'purged' is used in the
Bible is in the book of Hebrews, chapter one and verse three.
It's talking about the Lord Jesus Christ. 'Who being the
brightness of his glory, and the express image of his person,
and upholding all things by the word of his power, when he had
by himself purged,' there's the only time it's used in the
Bible, 'purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the
Majesty on high:'.
"Friend, when you leave this world, you are either
in Heaven or Hell. There is no intermediate stage. The Bible
says the rich man lifted up his eyes in Hell, being in torment.
When you leave this life, you either go to Heaven or to Hell.
"'Well, Preacher, is it that straightforward?'
Yes, sir, it's that straightforward. When you close your eyes
in death here, you'll open your eyes in eternity. You'll either
be in Heaven or Hell. There's no second chance after death.
"Now you listen to me. You may be thinking, 'But
if I go to purgatory and my sins are purged?' You cannot purge
your sins. If you stayed in Hell for all eternity, you could
never pay for your own sins.
"You can sit and philosophize and rationalize,
but when you leave this life, you lift up your eyes in either
Heaven or Hell. Jesus was saying, 'Today thou shalt be with Me
in Paradise! You're not going to some halfway house, you're
going to be with Me in Paradise!'
"The second part of Christ's answer is, 'thou
shalt be with me'! Hallelujah, there's Heaven! Brother, I'm
going to tell you, he met the Lord Jesus Christ, and that day
he was with Him!
"Someone says, 'What's Heaven look like?' I can
read in the book of Revelation about all the glories of that
New Jerusalem, but, my friend, let me tell you where Heaven
is: Heaven is wherever the Lord Jesus Christ is! Hallelujah,
not just Heaven, but Heaven with the Lord! That's what makes
it 'Heaven'.
"If you've been saved, you know what I'm talking
about tonight. I wouldn't want to go if He wasn't there. He's
what makes Heaven Heaven! He's the One Who died for our sins.
"He said, 'You're going to be with Me,' and then
the third part of this prayer is, He said, 'today'. Thank
God. Today...this day thou shalt be with Me in Paradise.
Immediate salvation. No 'praying through', no bargaining with
God, no trying to do the best you can, no saying, 'When I get
this taken care of, I'll come to Jesus.' No, you come just as
you are.
"Now listen. Jesus saves by grace. People that
say, 'Well I just believe I've got to do something to merit
salvation.' What could that thief do? He was hanging on a cross
dying. What could he do for Jesus to merit salvation? Nothing!
Absolutely nothing! He couldn't go join a church, he couldn't
get baptized, he couldn't give money. The only thing he could
do was pray, 'Lord, remember me.' That's all he could do!
"God doesn't want you to do anything. You
couldn't do anything to merit salvation. So many people are
saying in their hearts, 'I just feel like I need to do
such-and-such to earn His salvation.' No, Friend. You'll
take it just like the thief on the cross did, or you won't take
it at all. You'll either be saved just like this thief, or you
won't be saved.
"The Bible says in Hebrews 3:7, 'the Holy Ghost
saith, To day if ye will hear his voice....'
"Second Corinthians 6:2 says, '(For he saith, I
have heard thee in a time accepted, and in the day of salvation
have I succoured thee: behold, now is the accepted time; behold,
now is the day of salvation.)'
"Listen. Upon the authority of God's Word, I can
tell you that if you are here tonight lost--without Jesus
Christ--today is the day of salvation. The day that you hear
that you're a sinner and place your faith in Jesus Christ,
God will save you. How can you do that? You can come to Christ
by faith, confessing that you're a sinner and calling on Him
for mercy; and He will save you!
"Have you done that? 'Well, Preacher, I've joined
a church.' I'm not talking about that. 'I've been baptized.'
I'm not talking about that. 'I'm doing the very best I can.'
I'm not talking about that either. I want to know, has there
been a time in your life when you stopped in your busy schedule,
realized you were a sinner, and came to Jesus Christ just as you
are, asking Him to forgive you and save you? Have you done that?
"'Preacher, I've never done that.' Then you're
not a Christian. 'But, Preacher, I'm a member of a church!' I
don't care, nor does God care. 'I try to treat my neighbor
good.' So what. That won't get you to Heaven.
"I ask you a question, and I want you to be
honest with me and with yourself. Have you stopped in your life
somewhere and said, 'God, forgive me. I know I'm a sinner,
and I need You to forgive me and save me.' Have you done
that?
"I see a number of you nodding your head, and I
appreciate that. Let me ask you this now, if you've done that,
since then has your life changed? Are there fruits coming out
of your life telling the world around you that you're a
Christian? And if not, why not? I'm still in the Bible. It says
in II Corinthians 5:17, 'Therefore if any man be in Christ,
he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all
things are become new.' That's still Bible. Jesus said you
can tell a tree by the fruit that it bears.
"I was raised on a farm in Georgia. We planted
vegetables, had different crops. When I grew up, we had pecan
trees. They were not pe-CAHN trees. We raised 'em. We ought to
know what they're called! They're called PE-can trees. Y'all
good folks from this northern climate give it a try. Thank you.
Now, I never one time saw watermelons growing on a pecan tree.
I never saw cantaloupe or corn growing on a pecan tree. Do you
know what we had on pecan trees? Pecans! Amen. We'd go out and
plant corn, we expected corn to grow on the cornstalk. Never
had a pig grow on a cornstalk. Not one time.
"'Preacher, what are you talking about?' I'm
talking about this: you say you're a Christian, but there's no
Christian fruit in your life. You better check up. Salvation is
simple. Salvation is easy. Salvation has been paid for through
the Lord Jesus Christ. Have you experienced it? That's the
question. Today could be the day of your salvation. Let's pray
together.
"'Our Father, this evening I do trust that
You'll bless the simple, easy to understand Word of God that's
been shared today. Such a simple account of a man saved at his
worst, dying, going out into eternity. A wicked man, yet saved
by Your grace because he called on the name of Your precious
Son. I pray that You'll bless this evening. May Your Word find
a lodging place in hearts today, and may some sinner turn from
their wicked way and simply, humbly come to Christ tonight.
"Before I end my prayer, I wonder if you're here
tonight and you'd say, 'Brother Crosby...Preacher, I'm that
sinner. I've never been saved. I don't know Christ as Saviour,
but I want you to pray for me.' Would you slip your hand up so
I can pray for you?'
"'Father, I do trust that You'll bless these
who've raised their hands. LORD, may they see it's so simple.
All they need do is bow to Christ, saying, 'Lord, I'm a
sinner. Save me.' I pray You'll help them to come to You
tonight. In Jesus' name.
"Christians are still praying. Friend, if you're
here today without Jesus, and you'd like to be saved, I want to
invite you to come. Come. You say, 'Preacher, I don't know what
to do.' Just come. I'll meet you and help you. You can know
Christ tonight as your Saviour. You don't have to live in doubt
anymore. You don't have to live in fear of dying in your sin,
dying without Jesus. Would you come today? Won't you please
come?
"Let's sing song number two-hundred-fifty-seven in your hymnals. If
you need to come forward, come on while we sing."
Just as I am, without one plea,
But that Thy blood was shed for me,
And that Thou bidst me come to Thee,
O Lamb of God, I come, I come!
Just as I am, and waiting not
To rid my soul of one dark blot,
To Thee Whose blood can cleanse each spot,
O Lamb of God, I come, I come!
Just as I am, though tossed about
With many a conflict, many a doubt,
Fightings and fears within, without,
O Lamb of God, I come, I come!
Just as I am, poor, wretched, blind;
Sight, riches, healing of the mind,
Yea, all I need in Thee to find,
O Lamb of God, I come, I come!
Just as I am, Thou wilt receive,
Wilt welcome, pardon, cleanse, relieve;
Because Thy promise I believe,
O Lamb of God, I come, I come!
Just as I am, Thy love unknown
Hath broken every barrier down;
Now, to be Thine, yea, Thine alone,
O Lamb of God, I come, I come!
My friends, Jesus says in the book of Luke that 'except ye repent, ye shall all
likewise perish.' Won't you accept God's Way today? Won't
you ask the Lord Jesus Christ to save you from your sin? It's
your choice. Choose wisely....
'...Choose you this day whom ye will serve...as for me
and my house, we will serve the LORD.'

I received an e-mail that informed me "The A.C.L.U. doesn't
want crosses on Federal property."
Well, for that matter, the A.C.L.U. would probably like to have
anything to do with Jehovah God permanently removed from our
country altogether. "One nation, UNDER GOD...", "In God We
Trust", The 10 Commandments, Nativity Scenes at CHRISTmas,
Court Justices who judge righteously instead of creating laws
that legalize ________ (fill in the blank!)
Guess what? These crosses will be here--on federal property in
Washington D.C. and in National Cemeteries around the
Nation--'til these military men and women are resurrected....

God-less ways, where you're going, there are no crosses...no
