October 23, Twenty-third
Sunday after Pentecost (Proper 25):
Psalm
1; Exodus
22:21-27; 1
Thessalonians 2:1-8; Matthew
22:34-46
Whoever loves me will keep my word, says the Lord,
and my Father will love him and we will come to him. Jn 14:23
It’s the Twenty-third Sunday after Pentecost and
all are welcome! This week we celebrate the feasts of St. James of Jerusalem:
(brother of Our Lord Jesus Christ, 10/24), and Saint
Simon and Saint Jude, Apostles. St. Simon apostle and martyr was
distinguished from his zeal by the name of Zelotes. He preached with
great success in Mauritania, and other parts of Africa, and
according to the Greeks, even in Britain, where, though he made many
converts, he was crucified, A. D. 74. The anniversary of his death,
together with that of St. Jude, is commemorated on the 28th day of October (Friday).
Let us pray for: peace in our world, all those
affected by the destructive earthquake in Pakistan and India and
devastating floods in Central America. The famine stricken African
countries of Niger, Mali, Mauritania and Burkina Faso, the troubled
lands of Africa (especially Liberia, Cote d’Ivoire [former : Ivory
Coast ] and Sudan) and the people of Guyana. We also pray for
Presiding Bishop Frank Griswold, Diocesan Bishop John Croneberger,
his wife, and assistant Bishop Carol Gallagher. We remember in
prayer Hazel Carter, Francis Coleman, Carolyn Goodwin, Eula
Jefferson, Louise Meggett, Janice Nugent, Rudolph Perry, Tony Pina,
Victoria Sawyer, Amanda Scott, Rev. Mildred J. Solomon, and Aquinda
Toppins. Finally, we pray for all congregations in our diocese and
for the safety of our troops.
