October 9, Twenty-first Sunday after Pentecost (Proper 23):

Psalm 23;
Isaiah 25:1-9; Philippians 4:4-13; Matthew 22:1-14

‘For many are called, but few are chosen.’

It’s the Twenty-first Sunday after Pentecost and all are welcome. Our Service This morning is a Jazz Mass. This Service will take the melodies and chord structures of traditional Christian music to blend them into an urban style of music. All of the liturgical elements of the Mass will be accompanied by Trinity: Saint Barnabas’ acoustic Jazz Trio of Piano/Bass/Woodwinds. Assisting us in worship this morning is Bassist William “Bassie” Jones and Saxophonist/Educator Bill Phipps part of Newark’s well known Phipps family and a member of Trinity St. Philip’s Cathedral here in Newark. If we are successful in integrating Ministry and outreach we hope to continue this series on the second Sunday of each month. We also wish to represent St. Barnabas next Saturday at the District 4 Music Festival this Saturday, Oct. 15th. The Eucharist the principal act of worship on Sunday mornings in the Episcopal Church will be the central act of this jazz mass. All baptized persons are therefore welcome to receive Communion or come to the altar for a blessing.

Let us pray for: peace in our world, all those affected by the devastation caused by Hurricane Katrina. The famine stricken African countries of Niger, Mali, Mauritania and Burkina Faso, the troubled lands of Africa (especially Liberia, Cote d’Ivoire [former : Ivory Coast ] and Sudan) and the people of Guyana. We also pray for Presiding Bishop Frank Griswold, Diocesan Bishop John Croneberger and his wife. We remember in prayer Hazel Carter, Francis Coleman, Carolyn Goodwin, Eula Jefferson, Louise Meggett, Janice Nugent, Rudolph Perry, Tony Pina, Victoria Sawyer, Amanda Scott, Rev. Mildred J. Solomon, and Aquinda Toppins. Finally, we pray for all congregations in our diocese and for the safety of our troops.
