Sept. 18, Eighteenth Sunday after Pentecost (Proper
20):
‘So the last will be first, and the first will be
last.’
It’s the Eighteenth Sunday after
Pentecost and all are welcome, This
weeks church calendar brings the Feasts of St.
Matthew 1st Cent. Apostle and Evangelist. According to one ancient tradition, he was
the first evangelizer of Nubia (modern Sudan), September 21 and St. Maurice
and his Theban Legion (September
22) Nubian Martyrs, who were killed at Agauno, Switzerland ca. AD
287 for refusing to sacrifice to pagan divinities, These African
officers defended Swedes during the Scandinavian rebellion against
Germany. Several settlements in Europe - including St. Moritz - are
named after these Africans. The white flag with the black profile
became the flag of several separate Orders named for St. Maurice,
which sprung up all over Europe in the 12th century. Tradition
portrays him as the black knight who taught chivalry to the other
knights.
Let us pray for: peace in our world, all those
affected by the devastation caused by Hurricane Katrina, the famine
stricken African countries of Niger, Mali, Mauritania and Burkina
Faso, the troubled lands of Africa (especially Liberia, Cote
d’Ivoire [former : Ivory Coast ] and Sudan) and the people of
Guyana. We also pray for Presiding Bishop Frank Griswold, Diocesan
Bishop John Croneberger and his wife. We remember in prayer Francis
Coleman, Carolyn Goodwin, Eula Jefferson, Louise Meggett, Janice
Nugent, Rudolph Perry, Tony Pina, Victoria Sawyer, Amanda Scott,
Rev. Mildred J. Solomon, and Aquinda Toppins. Finally, we pray for
all congregations in our diocese and for the safety of our troops.
