Ninth Sunday after Pentecost (Proper 11), July 17,

For you did not receive a spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received a spirit of adoption.

It’s the Ninth Sunday after Pentecost and all are welcome. In some churches the Feast of Saint John Coltrane is observed today, July 17th. St. John's African Orthodox Church in San Francisco regards John Coltrane as its "patron saint." While this Day does not fall within the Episcopal Church Year calendar as a festival to be observed, the African Orthodox Church honors Saint John Coltrane. The African Orthodox Church owes its Episcopate and Apostolic Authority to the Syrian Church of Antioch where the disciples were first called Christians. St. Peter and St. Barnabas resided in Antioch  before setting out on their great missionary journeys, and St. Peter was the first Bishop there. Saint John’s music provided a form of ecstasy or catharsis transcending the limitations, dreariness, and desperation of ordinary existence. Also this week, on July 20th the Episcopal Church Year calendar sets this day apart to honor four women among them; Sojourner Truth known as "the Miriam of the Latter Exodus" and Harriet Ross Tubman known as "the Moses of her People."

Let us pray for: peace in our world, the victims of the London Terror Bombings, the troubled lands of Africa (especially Liberia, Cote d’Ivoire [former : Ivory Coast ] and Sudan). We also pray for Presiding Bishop Frank Griswold, Diocesan Bishop John Croneberger and his wife. We remember in prayer Francis Colemam, Carolyn Goodwin, Eula Jefferson, Louise Meggett, Janice Nugent, Rudolph Perry, Tony Pina, Victoria Sawyer, Amanda Scott, Rev. Mildred J. Solomon, and Aquinda Toppins. Finally, we pray for all congregations in our diocese and for the safety of our troops.

HYMNS THIS WEEK

Go Down Moses

Come, ye thankful people, come

Come Sunday   My Lord, what a morning

Let us break bread together on our knees

We are climbing Jacob's ladder
