Eleventh Sunday after Pentecost (Proper 13),
July 31
“Can God set a table in the wilderness?”
PSALM 78:1-4, 12-16 ;
Nehemiah 9:16-20; Romans 8:35-39; Matthew 14:13-21
It’s the Eleventh Sunday after Pentecost and all
are welcome!
Like the disciples in today's reading, it is
easy for us to be overwhelmed by the massive human need we witness
in our communities, our nation, and the world. But today's Gospel
tells us that in the face of overwhelming need, if we give a little,
God will do a lot. A state of emergency has been declared by the
government of Niger due to general shortage of food in the country.
The crisis in the south of the country has been caused by a drought
and a plague of locusts which destroyed much of last year's harvest.
Niger is a vast desert country and one of the poorest on earth.
Millions of people, a third of the population, face food shortages.
With a
BBC film crew in Niger broadcasting images of starving
children to the world, food aid shipments to the
country are starting to pick up. But UN under secretary-general for
humanitarian affairs Jan Egeland, who, told reporters that for many
it is too late. With 3.6 million people in Niger facing malnutrition
and the international response being "totally insufficient," the
United Nations expert on the right to food today said that under
international human rights treaties States Parties were obliged to
provide urgent assistance to any UN Member State threatened by
famine.
