Hi, I'm Mary Goloversic, author of over 45 books.
I never planned to be an author. For many years, I listened to the radio program,"Unshackled," out of Pacific Garden Mission in Chicago. When I became very sick (undiagnosed endometriosis) in 1987,1 realized that the mission was the right place for me to be at that time in my life. I called the radio station for the address of the mission; the man who took my phone call knew the name of the street, but not the number of the building. I had lots of pain and
little money and no map of Chicago. I hopped a bus and went off to Chicago. Arriving at a bus depot in a large city was quite a change for me, having lived in a small town in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan most of my life. I asked where State Street was and walked in the direction that the person pointed. When I saw a cross in a distance with the words, "Jesus Saves," I knew I was almost there.
The mission intake worker, also from Northern Michigan, accepted me. After staying at the mission for three months, through counseling I became aware that I was believing lies, especially the lie of people-pleasing. I thought that if I pleased people and did all they asked me to do, I was following God's command to love your neighbor. That was the lie I believed. How wrong I was. God wants us to be kind to people, but God does not want us to please people. We should do what God want us to do-please God, not please people.
Over the next few years, I realized many other people were also believing lies. I wanted to share what I had learned at the mission about recognizing lies, discovering truths, and applying the truths to daily living, so, at the age of
50, I started to write.
My background prepared me to write. The two college degrees (Bachelor of Science and Master of Education) with majors in education and numerous minors in many areas were useful for writing-research methods, literature, history, biology. Years in the teaching field helped me develop techniques for getting my ideas across to people of all ages Studying piano, vocal music, and art enabled me to write songs for my books and to illustrate them. Attending church and Bible studies, listening to Christian radio programs, and extensive Christian counseling guided me to discover Bible truths to battle the lies that life brings to each of us. Eventually I used the Scripture references to back up the written statements in my books.
My pastimes of people-watching, taking nature walks, plus traveling (USA,
Canada, Mexico, and living two years in Spain) provided pictures in my mind that I could turn into words on paper.
Marriage and parenting three sons gave me insights into family living. My friends showed me the lasting value of true friendships.
My tender heart gave me sympathy, but accidents, illness, surgeries, and troubles of all sorts gave me empathy that lets me identify with the troubles of other people. If I hadn't had all these heartbreaking experiences, I would not have become the storyteller that I now am.
My imagination and sense of humor add liveliness to my writing.
Without my faith in God, I would have accomplished little, but He has given me the strength to write the many manuscripts I have completed. Through God's promises, I have confidence to keep going. God gave me my talents, and I use them to serve Him.
As a young teenager, I wanted to be a full-time missionary to Africa. Almost 45 years later, I became a short-term missionary to Honduras! God often has plans for us to serve Him that are very different from our plans. We just have to be willing to do His will for our lives, not our will. I used my children's stories. Stubby the Stubborn Kitten and Candy the One-eared Cat (one of the seven stories in Raining Cats and Dogs and Fish) translated into Spanish for the mission trip and also presented accepting Jesus and using the eight steps to success. It was a wonderful time for me. The Hondurans really enjoyed Stubby and Candy and I enjoyed being with the Hondurans.
Last December when my husband and I stopped as the mission in Chicago where I learned to recognize lies, I was asked to write my life story for "Unshackled," a radio dramatization broadcast weekly around the world in eight languages from Pacific Garden Mission, the same radio program that led me to the same mission almost twenty years before! Now I can reach out to help others on radio as I was helped. What an opportunity and blessing.
My life story turned into the book. Woman in the Well, in which I tell about my battle with depression. The book is written to guide the reader to recognize the deceits of depression and replace the hurtful behaviors of depression with the helpful behavior of living by God's truths. Supposedly the book will be published in 2006 and the radio program will be broadcast the same year.
It's such an encouragement and joy to see my writings put to good use instead of remaining in my computer in the comer of my kitchen.
Here are some of the goals of my writing:
Tell people about God's Gift-Jesus, Who pays our way to a future in heaven
Guide people to Bible truths for godly success on earth
Show people how to recognize lies
Give practical applications of how to love instead of hate, help instead of hurt,
and heal with forgiveness
Bring glory to God
Please tell others about my books; I cannot afford to advertise.
