Genesis
The word Genesis means
"Beginnings". Our Heavenly Father is
the source of all created things. Genesis records
the beginning of all life, of man, of sin, of
sacrifice, of material civilization, of the
Chosen People, and of redemption. Genesis enfolds
all that the rest of the Bible unfolds.
Exodus
Exodus means ...... Exit,
Departure ...... Here we have the story of the
enslavement of the children of Israel in Egypt,
and their "going out" from Egypt
through a nation enslaved, delivered and set apart
in the service of God.
Leviticus
Although Leviticus does not deal
only with the special duties of the Levites, it
is so named because it concerns mainly the
service of worship at the tabernacle, which was
conducted by the priests who were the sons of
Aaron, assisted by many from the rest of the
tribe of Levi. Exodus gave the directions
for building regulations for worship. The
book of Numbers continues the history with
preparations for moving on from Sinai to Canaan.
Numbers
It relates the numbering of the
people on two occasions, the first at Sinai in
their second year in the wilderness, and the
other just before the death of Moses in the
fortieth year. In brief, it is the story of
the wilderness wanderings. The book of Numbers is
rich in fragments of ancient poetry, some of them
of great beauty.
Deuteronomy
Means "the repetition of the
Law," consists chiefly of three addresses
delivered by Moses to the people who had been
born in the wilderness, in which he rehearses
Israel's history after leaving Egypt, and charges
them to keep the Law. It closes with the
Song Of Moses, the Blessing Of Moses, and the
account of his death.
