Grandpa Said
My Grandpa taught me how to fish
Before I learned to walk.
Sometimes we just sat real quiet.
But most of the time we talked.
He taught me how to bait a hook
And how to cast a line.
He said it wasnt how many I caught
But the patience I learned trying.
It didnt matter if I crawled or walked
That someday I'de learn to run.
But to always take time along the way
To stop and have some fun.

Grandpa said when I have a friend
To share in the things I do
The joy I feel inside my heart
Will be multiplied by two.
Sometimes he put his hand on my shoulder
And for a long time left it there.
He wouldnt say one single word
But I knew how much he cared.
Life he said is a winding road
At times I would lose my way.
But I would never be afraid
If I took the time to pray.
There would be things I couldnt see
But to keep faith and hope alive.
Because as long as I held on to those
Theres nothing I wouldnt survive.

I remember once I caught a big fish
It struggled till it broke my line.
And just when I felt like giving up
Grandpa said "You cant win every time".
I'll never forget when I was messing around
And dropped my fishing pole in the lake.
I knew I was in trouble for sure.
All he said was "We make Mistakes".
I worked for a month cleaning the dock
To buy a new fishing pole.
Grandpa said the lesson I learned
Was worth more than the price of gold.
I didnt realize what Grandpa meant
When he said he would always be near.
But a year ago he went to Heaven
And when I'm fishing I know he's here.
