Romans 10:14-15

    1. How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed?
and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard?
and how shall they hear without a preacher?
    2. And how shall they preach, except they be sent? as it is written,
How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace,
and bring glad tidings of good things!

Tom, Cindy and their children, Kristi and Josh, felt the Lord tugging on their hearts and calling them to serve in Mexico in 1994, but things just weren't right for them to leave.  It wasn't until Spring 1996, when the teens from their church, took a trip to the Tijuana area of Mexico that God again dealt with Tom's heart about going to Mexico.

This time, God was definitely in it as things took a swift turn.  They began reading books and looking at maps.  When they came upon La Paz, though very far from the border, they felt a tugging on their hearts for this city.

In June 1996, along with his pastor, Dwight Tomlinson, missionary Bob Walker, and another friend, Tom took a survey trip to La Paz.  It was then he knew for sure that he HAD to come, HAD to work and HAD to spread the gospel in this needy city!

Things moved quick from then on.  The Johoskys moved out of their rented house, Tom ended his job and in early September 1996 they began deputation.

Cindy kept her job, and it was decided that Kristi, who was entering her first year of junior high school, would stay with Cindy in an apartment and go to school, while Josh would travel with Tom and be "road schooled."

In June 1997, Cindy quit her job and the family went on the road together for another year, until they reached a level of support in which they could begin language training in Ensenada.  Their training took three months.  During that time they were in school for two weeks and in La Paz two weeks.  The travel back and forth was grueling, but this is what God had called them to do.

In October and November of 1998 they finished their deputations, with some previously scheduled meetings.  In November, they officially began the work in La Paz.

On November 21, 1999 they had a chartering service and named their new church "Iglesia Bautista El Faro" (Lighthouse Baptist Church).
