What is this thing we call a Christmas Tree? Why do we bring a dead tree into our homes, decorate it with lights, hang bright and shiny objects on it, then put gifts for our family and friends under it? How can this symbol of Christmas be glorifying to our Savior and how can it remind us of all He has done for
us?
Yes, I have a Christmas tree too and as I decorate it each year, here is what the different parts remind me
of ...
THE FOUNDATION
The first thing I must do when I put up my tree is to make sure it has a strong, solid foundation. Likewise, my faith must has a strong foundation in Christ.
2 Timothy 2:19
Nevertheless the foundation of God standeth sure,
having this seal. The Lord knoweth them that are
his. And, let everyone that nameth the name of Christ
depart from iniquity.
THE SNOW
Around the base of the tree I put a white sheet to look like the tree is standing in snow. That snow reminds me that Christ's blood has cleansed me from sin.
Isaiah 1:18
Come now, and let us reason together, saith the Lord;
though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be white as snow.
LIGHTS
The next thing that goes on my Christmas tree is the lights. They remind me that Jesus is the Light of The World.
John 8:12
Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world;
he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness,
but shall have the light of life.
ORNAMENTS
I put the ornaments on my tree to make it pretty, to glorify it. The ornaments remind me that my life should be one that glorifies Christ.
1 Corinthians 6:20
For ye are bought with a price; therefore glorify God
in your body, and in your spirit, which are Gods.
As the ornaments on my tree reflect the light, so my life should reflect the light of the world, Jesus Christ.
Matthew 5:16
Let your light so shine before men,
that they may see your good works,
and glorify your Father which is in heaven.
GARLAND
As I wrap the garland around my tree, I am reminded that Christ wrapped Himself in humanity for us.
John 1:14
An the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us,
and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten
of the Father, full of grace and truth.
STAR
Some people put a star on the top of their tree. That star reminds me of the star that the wise men followed.
Matthew 2:9,10
When they had heard the king, they departed;
and, lo, the star, which they saw in the east,
went before them, till it came and stood over where the young child was.
When they saw the star, they rejoiced with exceeding great joy.
ANGEL
While some put a star on top of the tree, I prefer to put an angel on mine. It reminds me of the angel that announced the greatest event of all time, the birth of our Savior.
Luke 2:10,11
And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold,
I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people.
For unto you is born this day, in the city of David,
a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.
As I stand and look at my tree, I am reminded ...
Galatians 3:13
Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law,
being made a curse for us: for it is written,
Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree:
