Firemen work on the roof of the Pentagon after a hijacked aircraft crashed into it.  The crash caused untold casualties and massive damage that sent the nation's capital into shock and led President Bush to order extraordinary security measures.  District of Columbia Mayor Anthony Williams declared a state of emergency in the city and all the hospitals in the region were put on 'maximum alert.'
