On September 14, 2001, while visiting the New York City site of the
World Trade Center disaster, President Bush was presented with
the Police Shield of Port Authority Police Officer, George
Howard, who perished in the disaster. During a speech before
a joint session of Congress on September 20, 2001 the President
held up Howard's shiny silver police shield and declared,
"Some will carry memories of a face and a voice gone forever. I will carry this.
It is my reminder of lives that ended and a task that does not
end."
When he held up that badge, he meant it and President Bush still
carries that badge today.
Before his untimely death on September 11, 2001, Officer Howard
had designed a special rescue unit. The PAPD had that truck
built and today it handles emergencies at the JFK International
Airport, where he last worked.
The truck, dedicated in Officer Howard's memory and bearing his
shield number #1012, was in the Presidential Inaugural Parade in
Washington D.C., on January 20, 2005. Riding in the truck,
along with PAPD officers, were Officer Howard's sister Gerianne
Satterfield, his niece Patricia Petree, his brother Tim Howard
and nephew Andrew Howard.
