As the mother of a LAPD officer, I got rather disgusted
after 9/11, when the firemen were getting all the 'atta-boys'
and the police officers were more or less being ignored.
Since I do webpages as a hobby I decided I would do a page
to honor a fallen police officer. I searched the web
and at random choose the name of George Howard, a
police officer with the NY/NJ Port Authority Police Department.
After searching the web for information I put up the page
In Memory of Officer George Howard.
I added a note at the bottom stating I did not know Officer
Howard, nor did I know his family or any of his co-workers,
but if anyone knew them I'd love to be in contact with them.
After being on the web for about 2 months, I received an
email from a Lt. Hassett
|
of the NY/NJ Port Authority Police
Dept. As a good friend of Officer Howard, he was still
in close touch with the family and would let them know of the
page I had done honoring Officer Howard.
He also told me that the PAPD had lost 37 officers on
that fateful day as well as the ONLY K-9 killed in the
collapse of the World Trade Center towers.. I asked
for the names of the other 36 officers and the dog so I could
put up a Memorial page for the 37 Officers and a page for
the K-9.
As a result of the information I received, on January 6, 2002
NY/NJ Port Authority Police Dept. 9/11
Memorial, and In Memory of PAPD K-9 Sirius web pages
were put out on the web.
The PAPD was absolutely thrilled that their Department
was being recognized, as
|
they have long been overshadowed
by the NYPD. The word quickly spread, and soon the
pages were getting over 500 hits a day.
In grateful appreciation, the NY/NJ PAPD invited me to come
to NYC for a visit. The picture above was taken the
morning I left CA for my visit to NY. During my visit
I was able to attend the Memorial Service for K-9 Sirius.
It was truly a once in a lifetime, Cinderella trip! The
pictures from that trip can be seen at My New York City Adventure.
