A TRIBUTE TO A HERO
P.O. BRUCE REYNOLDS   #1800

We are gathered here today to honor the memory of Police Officer Bruce Reynolds of the Port Authority Police.  It goes without saying that we miss him terribly and that he shall forever occupy a special place in our hearts.

Being human, we mourn the loss of Bruce along with the other heroes, who gave their lives in the World Trace Center Attack.  These gallant men and women, who so eagerly, so willingly, went forth to help those who were injured and dying would not have us weep and bemoan their passing.  They would have us celebrate their courage, fortitude and nobility of character.  The courage of their convictions, even to the point of sacrificing their own lives, is the spirit that makes them heroes.  We honor them as the best of our profession here today.

As I ponder the names of those we honor, it occurs to me that the most worthy among us were selected for separation in this way.  Bruce knew the nature of the risk he took, yet he never wavered, he never hesitated.  Bruce will be remembered for his lumbering stride, his impish grin and self-deprecating humor.  His quiet strength of purpose and steady hand was always evident.  Who can say his spirit does not remain with us?

And what of the future for those of us who remain?  Does it not behoove us to rededicate our hearts and minds to the task that lies ahead?  To the task of protecting the public and our American way of life?  What better way to pay homage to those who made the supreme sacrifice that to dedicate our lives to the ideals for which they died, so as to ensure that their sacrifice will not have been in vain.

I salute you Bruce … I salute you as a colleague, a friend and a man of honor and valor.  I know that someday we shall meet again, so until that day I say, "Sleep well my friend and know that you will forever be in our hearts and minds."  God Bless you, God Bless your family, God Bless the men and women who wear this uniform and may God Bless our great nation.
