A WONDERFUL SAVIOR

By George W. Sinquefield

(Isa 9:6 KJV)  "For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace."

This verse is a prophesy of a Wonderful Savior who brought a wonderful salvation. If we should list all His other names and titles mentioned in Scripture, at the end we could truthfully say "Wonderful."

I.    Jesus is a Wonderful Person.

       R. C. Campbell -- "Jesus is the Light Of The World, the Hope for a lost world. On Him the eyes of the world are focused. Around Him the thought of the world revolves. In Him the salvation of the world hinges. From Him the light of the world radiates. By Him the bitters of life are sweetened. From Him all power flows. By Him sinners are unshackled. He lifts the burdens of sin, penetrates the fog of life and dispels the shadows of death. He lifts the loads of our condemnation and changes our fading hopes into tapestries of fadeless glory."

The age long cry of humanity has been "Show us the Father." Jesus came revealing the character of God. "I am God uncovered. I am God in the flesh. I have come down from heaven to earth that man might find and know the Father."

Jesus claimed to exist with the Father before the foundation of the world. In John 17, He speaks of "The glory He had with the Father before the world began." In John 1:1, going back into the ages before the world was made, "In the beginning was the Word and the Word was with God and the Word was God. We read, "The Word became flesh and dwelt among us."

The same names were used of Jesus as were used of God. In Isaiah 44:6 God says, "I am the first and I am the last.". In Revelation 22:13, Jesus says, "I am the first and the last." In Psalms 24 there is a question, "Who is this King of Glory?" The answer comes back, "The Lord of hosts, He is the King of Glory." In I Corinthians 2:8, speaking of Jesus, "They crucified the Lord of Glory."

There are five great attributes of God and all five are attributed to Jesus.

1.    Omnipotent (possessing all power)

"All power is given unto me in heaven and on earth." All power -- over disease, nature, evil spirits -- all power.

2.    Omniscient (possessing all knowledge)

The woman at the well discovered that Jesus knew the secrets of her heart. -- John 2:24-25

3.    Omnipresent (everywhere at the same time)

Where 2 or 3 are gathered in His name, He is in the midst. Today He is meeting with hundreds, yes thousands of small groups over the world. -- Matthew 28:18-20

4.    God is eternal

Genesis 1:1 -- "In the beginning was God"
John 1:1 -- "In the beginning was the Word (Jesus)."
Moses said to Pharoah, "I Am hath sent me." Jesus said, "Before Abraham was, I Am."

5.    God is immutable (He never changes)

With Jesus, "The same yesterday, today and forever."

Rousseau, the skeptic said, "If the life and death of Socrates are those of a sage, the life and death of Jesus are those of a God."

A famous Chinese statesman once said to Col. Dyer, "Men ought always to admire success. I cannot understand why clever men like some of you Europeans, should actually worship Jesus Christ. Why, that man's life was a failure and he was actually crucified at the end of it. How can you call yourselves followers of such a man as that?"
Col. Dyer said, "Well, your Excellency, I don't know what you call failure. When a man's words and the story of his life have influenced many of the best and noblest of men for nearly 2000 years, I don't call that failure."

Renan said, "There is such a glory about Jesus that whatever the future may unfold, Christ will never be surpassed."

Jesus is the most unusual person ever to walk on earth. He is the God-man, fully God and fully man. His life was marked by striking contrasts that reflect both His genuine humanity and His full deity.

Someone has written of the Lord Jesus: "He who is the Bread of Life began His ministry hungering. He who is the Water of Life ended his ministry thirsting. Christ hungered as man, yet fed the hungry as God. He was weary, yet He is our rest. He paid tribute, yet He is the King. He was called a devil, but He cast out demons. He prayed, yet He hears prayer. He wept, and He dries our tears. He was sold for 30 pieces of silver, yet He redeems sinners. He was led as a lamb to the slaughter, yet He is the Good Shepherd. He gave His life, and by dying He destroyed death."

Yes, Jesus is a wonderful Person. He is a wonderful Lord, wonderful Son of God, wonderful Son of Man, wonderful High Priest, wonderful King of Kings, wonderful in every sense of the word.

II.    Jesus has a wonderful name.

The angel said to Joseph, "Thou shalt call His name Jesus." Jesus -- many believe that our Savior alone has this name, but this is not true. Many were named Jesus.

1.    There was one Jesus who would one day become a famous brigand chief.
2.    Jesus, surnamed Barabbas, whom the people preferred to Jesus Christ.
3.    Jesus Justus, a trusted helper of Paul.
4.    Jesus, Paul's opponent on the island of Cyprus.
5.    Jesus, the friend of Josephus, the Jewish historian.
6.    Jesus, the priest.
7.    Jesus, the peasant who would one day terrify Jerusalem with his cries.
Why so many by this name? Perhaps they were named after 2 great national heroes. A name changes as it passes from one language to another. Joshua and Jesus (meaning Jehovah is salvation) are the same only one is the Hebrew form (Joshua) and the other is the Greek form (Jesus).

In Numbers 13:16 "Moses called Hoshea, the son of Nun, Joshua." This is the first Jesus in history and under his leading the people conquered the promised land. This Jesus died and centuries passed by. The people, because of sin, lost the land and were taken captive to Babylon. Then after 40 years the 2nd Jesus came. Joshua, the high priest who led the people back to their land, rebuilt the temple and restored Jehovah worship.

The angel said, that our Lord was to be named Jesus and we can appreciate something of the association. He was named after the great captain who drove out the Canaanites and led the people to take possession of the land and after Joshua, the great high priest who brought the people out of bondage. "For He shall save his people from their sins." His wonderful name means a wonderful salvation.

The following poem was written by Sheldon Helsley, Cody, Wyoming.

        The Wonder of His Name!

If I should take my scroll, and pen
With all the eloquence of men
The things that in my heart abide
Since I've known Him, the Crucified,
A World of books could not contain
The mighty wonders of His Name!

If I could speak with angel power
Till men would listen hour on hour
To stories of the Savior's love
And beauties of the home above,
The best I'd speak could not explain
The mighty wonders of His Name!

If I could sing till men would see
The face of God instead of me,
And bow themselves unto the ground,
And turn from sin the world around,
My song would never half make plain
The mighty wonders of His Name!

"Neither is there salvation in any other for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved."

(Phil 2:9 KJV)  "Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name:"

(Phil 2:10 KJV)  "That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth;"

(Phil 2:11 KJV)  "And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father."

One has put it this way.

The Name of Jesus is so sweet
I love its music to repeat
It makes my joys full and complete
The precious Name of Jesus.
        Another;
There is a name I love to hear,
I love to sing its worth,
It sounds like music in my ear,
The sweetest name on earth.
        And another;
Oh, for a thousand tongues to sing,
The glories of my God and King.
        And that song we love to sing;
All hail the power of Jesus' name,
Let angels prostrate fall,
Bring forth the royal diadem,
And crown Him Lord of all.

He's the lily of the valley, the bright and morning star,
He's the fairest of ten thousand to my soul.

        And another;
Sweetest note in seraph song,
Sweetest name on mortal tongue,
Sweetest carol ever sung,
Jesus, blessed Jesus.
        L. B. Bridges wrote:
Jesus, Jesus, Jesus,
Sweetest name I know,
Fills my every longing,
Keeps me singing as I go.
His name is a name "which is above every name." "O, magnify the Lord with me and let us exalt his name together." (Psa. 34:3)

III.    Jesus is a wonderful Savior.

The angel said, "Unto you a Savior is born."
Unto you who are lost in sin.
Unto you who are headed for hell.
Unto you who are trying to be saved by good works.
Unto you who think being religious and being saved is the same thing.
Unto you who think reforming your life is all that is necessary.
Unto you who think obeying the old law -- the ten commandments, etc. will save your soul.
Unto you a Savior is born and He'll save you if you'll only trust Him.

(John 3:16 KJV)  "For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life."

(John 6:47 KJV)  "Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me hath everlasting life."

Jesus came to bring life to those who are dead in sin.

(John 10:10 KJV)  "The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly."

A newspaper once had a special column headed, "There is good news today." It told of good things people were doing. The Gospel of Jesus Christ is, without a doubt, the best news this world has ever heard or ever will hear. The word "gospel" means "good news." It tells of the good things God is doing and by far the best thing was that "He gave His only begotten Son to be the Savior of a lost world.

By His death on the cross, Jesus has made possible salvation for every person who will accept it by accepting Him as Lord and Savior.

He has promised never to turn one away who comes to Him in repentance and faith.

(Rom 10:13 KJV)  "For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved."

(Rev 22:17 KJV)  "And the Spirit and the bride say, Come. And let him that heareth say, Come. And let him that is athirst come. And whosoever will, let him take the water of life freely."

Hear Jesus as He says, "He that cometh to Me, I will in no wise cast out."
He didn't turn away the hated Publican.
He didn't turn away the adulterous woman.
He didn't turn away Paul, the persecutor.
He didn't turn away the dying thief on the cross.
And He'll never turn anyone away.

        He is able to save.

(2 Tim 1:12 KJV)  "For the which cause I also suffer these things: nevertheless I am not ashamed: for I know whom I have believed, and am persuaded that he is able to keep that which I have committed unto him against that day."

(Heb 7:25 KJV)  "Wherefore he is able also to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by him, seeing he ever liveth to make intercession for them."

(James 4:12 KJV)  "There is one lawgiver, who is able to save and to destroy: who art thou that judgest another?"

(Jude 1:24 KJV)  "Now unto him that is able to keep you from falling, and to present you faultless before the presence of his glory with exceeding joy,"

Jesus died the awful death of crucifixion because He considered you and me worth dying for. Oh, what a wonderful Savior.

Some years ago there was a farmer who drove into a certain little town to get his week's supply of groceries. After he had gotten all of his packages ready, he started out of the door to put the things into the wagon and then to carry them on back to his home out on his farm. But as he came to the door, he noticed that the horses had pulled the leather strips loose from the post where he had hitched them there, and the horses had started racing off down the road dragging the wagon behind them. He dropped everything in his hands, and ran out as fast as he could to stop those runaway horses. He at last caught hold of the leather thongs up there side of the horses, but in doing so he pulled himself and the horses to a stop and was pulled under the horses there. Lying at last upon the ground, half-unconscious, with people gathering round everywhere --; they looked down at him and said, "Bill, why in the world did you do it? Why would you be willing to risk your life just for the sake of these old horses and this old wagon here? Man, you might have lost your life.? And that man looked up, in his half-unconscious condition, and said, "Look in that wagon, and you will see the reason why." And they went around and looked in that wagon and saw that farmer's little daughter still asleep on a pallet in the back of that wagon. That's why it is the farmer was willing to give his life if necessary, in order to save that life of his little daughter.

He loved us so much. Do you love Him? Have you gone to Him and asked Him to come into your heart to save you and give you eternal life? He is waiting for you to do just that. I urge you -- don't keep Him waiting.
