Baggies: If you are donating more than 10 pocket prayer cloths (3x5 size) then I ask IF you can kindly put them into ziploc baggies. (sandwich or snack size;any brand) If you cannot then please do not worry about it, I always buy extra supplies for this purpose. The baggies serve as keeping everything together, keeping it clean and for the papers not to get lost with them when I send them.

Cards: Please make your own card to go with the prayer cloth. I always send an explanation of prayer cloths but please use your own encouragement verse, poem or if you like just put “This prayer cloth was made with a prayer in every stitch by (YOUR NAME) in (YOUR STATE). Thank you for your service to our country. God Bless You Always!” I ask that you put your first name and state so the troops can see that we are making them from ALL around America and we are ALL praying for them. You can tie it to the prayer cloths with ribbon or string or just put into the baggie with the cloth. You can add your address IF you like or use the ministries address if you like.

Charms: Many people ask about charms and such for the prayer cloths. This is optional as we all cannot do this. The real shiny crosses or crucifixes should not be used for pocket prayer cloths. But, on the bigger prayer cloths or for the public prayer cloths they can be used. Any suitable charms maybe used.

Sizes of: Pocket prayer cloths mainly go to the troops though I do get requests via internet for them also (for anyone). Big prayer cloths go to injured troops, hospitals, veterans and we also do public prayer cloths around the world. Pocket prayer cloths are approximately 3x5 inches (enough to fit in a pocket) and the bigger prayer cloths are 12x12 or 12x18 inches big. These sizes are approximate and if you are off on the size please do not worry they all find homes.

Colors: muted colors are best for troops. This is dark blues, greens, browns, tans, camo colored yarn, blues, black, greys, reds, and red/white/blue. No neons or white for troops please. This is because we don’t want colors that attract attention for the ones that are in harm’s way. The bigger prayer cloths can be any color, BUT remember most are men so please use men colors mainly. Public prayer cloths can be any color.

Yarns: any yarn maybe used though worsted weight is best for the prayer cloths as this is more tougher than some other yarns. Please use a tighter stitch mmore than a lacy stitch.

Other items we accept: Prayer shawls – for injured troops, for servicemen and woman’s family. Please see the shawl ministry website for more information about prayer shawls. This website is offered on the links page. Prayer bunnies, angels, and bear rugs- for ill children and children of the servicemen and woman. Prayer aghans – for injured troops. But we mainly make and send prayer cloths.

Donations and Requests: We get donations from members of the group, and from the public prayer cloth recipents that feel led to give a donation. We NEVER ask for a donation. The donations go for shipping, packaging and for operational expenses. Following the tradition of Jesus and the apostles who gave themselves freely to those in need of prayers, comfort and healing; we in the prayer cloth ministry give the prayer cloths free of cost. Anyone can request a prayer cloth even members, member’s friend’s and family or if you know of a unit/serviceman or woman in need, please ask. We are honored to help and we also support our member’s also. A ministry isn’t a ministry without people like you!!

LOOM PATTERNS

Big Loomed Prayer Cloth
approx. 12x12 inches
Materials Needed:
Purple Knifty Knitter Rectangular Loom
Worsted Weight Yarn
Loom Hook
Crochet Hook (size G or H)
1. Using two strands of the worsted weight yarn, wrap your yarn around the peg at the outside of the loom to keep it in place and then begin wrapping your yarn in a figure 8 pattern from side to side until you have wrapped all the pegs but the last 2 pegs on each side on the other end. Leave these pegs unwrapped. You should have a total of 32 pegs wrapped
2. At this point, you will be knitting/looming until your piece measures 12 inches long. Then using your crochet hook, remove the loops from the pegs. For detailed instructions, see http://www.provocraft.com/projects/kniftyknitter/rectangle.loom.html for step-by-step instructions on wrapping and knitting on a straight loom. It also shows you how to remove the pegs.
Clicking on the pictures, gives you a magnified look at the different steps. 3. Since the loomed cloth is a large prayer cloth, you can use a Size G or H crochet hook and worsted weight yarn to make these crosses and they will fit just fine on the cloths.
4. Using matching thread and a simple running appliqué stitch, sew the cross to the front of the loomed prayer cloth. Because the prayer cloth is a double thickness, you shouldn’t have any trouble sewing it on and keeping the thread from showing on the back of the cloth. That’s all there is to it.
Note: Depending on your tension as a loomer, you might need to adjust the number of pegs you wrap to get a prayer cloth width close to 12”. You can always knit a swatch of several inches and then finish it off to see how wide it will be and then adjust as needed.
